WHAT'S THE POINT OF THE SKELETAL SYSTEM?
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE BONES WE HAVE?

IN TOTAL WE HAVE 206 BONES AND OUR SKELETON CAN BE CONSIDERED IN THE FOLLOWING WAY . . .
Appendicular Skeleton
Axial
Skeleton
The appendicular skeleton is associated with movement . . .

. . . Think about the shoulder girdle, the pelvic girdle, the bones of the arms and legs
The axial skeleton is associated with the protection of vital organs. . .

. . .Think about the skull, the spine and the ribcage
Brief Goose at the Bone Anatomy

Think about when you go to the butchers and ask the sprightly chap behind the counter for a long bone for your pooch. The tubular part is called the diaphysis. The two lumpy sections on the end are called the epiphysis and they are spongy in the middle.

Each epiphysis meets the diaphysis at the metaphysis – the narrow area that contains the growth plate (okay if you want to get pedantic about it this is called the epiphyseal plate)

But where do bones grow? I hear you cry in suppressed, quivering desire. This occurs within the medullary cavity which has (I’d say) a rather delicate lining called the endosteum where growth, repair and even remodelling occurs. Genius. On top of that, within this is the yellow bone marrow (where we can produce antibodies).
